Many Faculty/Staff will want to be added to or removed from a Campus Distrubtion List. These lists are maintained by ITS and are usually created for each department, building, and various campus-related organizations organizations. Several Fac/Staff will ask about getting on or off the UNCA Forum ( unca_forum@unca.edu ) list. All of these questions should be directed to Joy Jones (x6404), who can edit these lists. [Proposed new ITS policy may go into effect in the near future under which the ITS department may no longer be maintaining these lists. In this case, Fac/Staff can create and maintai (...)

Most of us at one time or another has experienced the woes of having some type of malware on our computer whether it be spam, a virus, phishing software, pop-ups or some other form of frustration. Often, these prove to be little more than annoyances which need to be removed. Some, however, can do serious damage not only to your computer and the files you've stored on it, but also to your life beyond technology (as is the case with Identity Theft or hackers). Therefore, smart, safe computing is a must in today's world. Tips on how to practice smart computing can be found at the followin (...)
As a result of a high volume of recent notifications of copyright infringements which have taken place on computers located on our campus, Jim Kuhlman, CIO of ITS and overseer of copyright infringement issues involving UNCA, sent the following emails to faculty and staff, and students, on 9/19/08. These emails (student email is shared within the faculty/staff email) provide some important information and reminders regarding this subject and are therefore being added to the SRS Knowledgebase for reference purposes:   " MUSIC & OTHER DOWNLOADS   Today, ITS is sending the foll (...)

UNCA Computers Any computer equipment no longer needed should be reported to the HelpDesk.  The HelpDesk will then submit a ticket (work order) under Repair and ITS Staff will come by and pick up the old equipment.  Salvageable items will be re-used by ITS. Non-UNCA (Personal) Computers If your computer is still in decent working order, you might consider offering it to Charlotte Street Computers' ecycleme.com recycling outlet , which has partnered with the Eblen Foundation and AB Tech to refurbish computers for students and educators. Due to a limited amount of available manpower, it is the policy of ITS not to disconnect, move or reconnect computer equipment when a user is changing office locations or moving equipment to a different location in an existing office (unless clear, approved extenuating circumstances exist). Users are asked to disconnect their own equipment, making note of where and how parts were connected. If they choose not to move the equipment themselves, they must make arrangements with Campus Operations to have it moved for them (**all equipment must be disconnected before Campus Operations staff will ag (...)

Faculty/Staff personal computers:   It is the policy of ITS that we do not work on personal computers belonging to UNCA Faculty, Staff or anyone outside of the UNCA realm, with the exception of the minimal support provided through the ResNet Service Center to dorm students. This policy includes personal (non-UNCA-owned) computers being used on-campus for work-related purposes. Students living in the dorms:   Due to the fact that they are living on UNCA's campus and connecting to UNCA's network 24/7,the ResNet Service Center provides some basic software support to dorm students. All username change requests should be directed to: Richard White -- ITS / Networking & Systems Director rwhite@unca.edu 232-5009 User needs to have made all legal changes (Social Security, etc.) before a request will be considered. This may not be necessary if the user is requesting a change simply because he/she goes by a middle name instead of a first name.
ITS is unfortunately unable to offer the service of moving users’ computers from one location to another due to lack of manpower to be able to keep on top of such requests without it cutting too deeply into our other obligations. Users who wish to have their computers moved should contact Facilities Management to take care of it. However, they will only move the computers after the cables, etc. have been disconnected. In other words, they will not disconnect then reconnect the computers and their peripherals. The user must do this him/herself. Once the computer has been moved, it is expe (...)
Having recently updated our Trend antivirus server to a newer version, it is now silently auto-updating clients to this newer version...which in turn uninstalls Spybot Search & Destroy, a spyware removal application which we apparently installed on your computer at previous time. Although this was unanticipated, it is not harmful in any way. Confirming the removal of SpyBot and rebooting is perfectly fine.
All inquiries and problem reports regarding telephones should be directed to: Judy Waycaster Telecommunications Coordinator 232-4995 waycaste@unca.edu
